The Action Center (Notification Center or Notifications) is perhaps one of the most noticeable changes in build 9860. Although we’ve seen an early look of the feature thanks to a leaked video, now every Windows Insider can test the Windows 10 Action Center. Windows 8 introduced toast notifications, which allow you to preview at glance what actions may require your attention. But often times, when you receive a new notification, you are doing something else or you are away from your computer, you will miss on these alerts. Then when is time to review what you missed, you have to go back to the Start screen and hunt down those Live Tiles with notifications, which isn’t very convenient. What I’m trying to say is that Windows 8 nor Windows 8.1 doen’t provide an easy way to collect and store notifications for later viewing. The Action Center in Windows 10 will address this issue. The idea of a centralize place to store notifications isn’t new, other operating systems have it, and it’s now even present in Windows Phone 8.1. In Windows 10 build 9860, Microsoft is bringing this feature to the desktop and like in Windows Phone, you have the option to allow or block which apps are allowed to appear in the Action Center. It’s worth noting that Microsoft is only enabling the feature and basic notifications in build 9860, more refinements will be included in later builds and final product. The feature at this point offers notifications for the system and apps for emails, messages, Facebook updates, and other alters. And the notifications are grouped by app and time, you can close notifications one-by-one or you can use the clear all button.
The Action Center has dedicated button in the Taskbar and it’s not tie to the system tray.
If you wish to change the settings of which apps shoot notifications, you can go to PC settings > Search and apps > Notifications.
You can right-click the Action Center icon to access a few settings such option to hide notifications for 1, 3, or 8 hours.
Also notifications won’t pile-up forever, if you restart your PC or sign-out, the notifications will be reset. Despite the UI is very plain at this point and the limitations, the Action Center baked in build 9860 version of Windows 10 works as expected, but future builds will include more improvements.
